Literary Chinese
Classical Chinese, also known as Literary Chinese, is the language used in classical Chinese literature from around the 5th century BCE. For millennia, it remained the standard for formal writing across the Sinosphere, akin to Latin's role in post-Roman Europe. Despite its conservative evolution, which does not fully reflect the changes in spoken Chinese varieties, Literary Chinese was the prestige writing system in East Asia, influencing Japan, Korea, Ryukyu, and Vietnam. These regions adapted it to their own languages and developed unique reading systems and character forms. Although now largely replaced by vernacular Chinese in China and local vernaculars elsewhere, Literary Chinese remains a testament to the historical breadth of Chinese scholarly and cultural practices.
